Sales & Marketing 2016 Salary Guide

China’s economic slowdown has seen falling demand for high end Luxury items, such as Watches and Jewelry, and this has had a significant impact on the employment market.

As a result of new legislation surrounding anti-bribery and anti-corruption laws, there has been a significant decrease in tourists from Mainland China. This has driven sales down across Hong Kong’s Luxury and Mass-Market Retail sectors and affected growth and hiring volumes.

China’s economic slowdown has seen falling demand for high end Luxury items, such as Watches and Jewelry, and this has had a significant impact on the employment market. However Premium brands within these sectors, and also Luxury Champagne, or Spirits brands paint a more positive picture, as affordable luxury items still maintain a stronghold in the market, and therefore job opportunities in these sectors remain available.

The Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector has seen some changes in 2015 with a number of regional operations decentralising and moving large regional functions out of Hong Kong, to lower cost employment markets like Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

As a result of this, businesses continue to localise operations in Asia and there is a continued focus on hiring local talent for the local market. However, global multinational corporations still have a significant proportion of foreign nationals at the top of the hierarchy and many FMCG companies still have Senior Vice Presidents/General Manager’s/MD’s coming from overseas.

As a general trend across Sales and Marketing, the ratio of Local talent to internationally sourced professionals is approximately 70:30, but over the past year, there has been a significant amount of redundancies of senior expatriates, who find it difficult to identify similarly senior roles in the region.

The contract market continues to grow. The majority of contract positions in Commerce are at a more Junior level, for roles such as Marketing Assistant or Marketing Executive, and there continue to be a higher proportion of contract marketing positions in the Banking & Financial Services sector than Commerce.

The Digital & eCommerce discipline remains a challenge for employers in Hong Kong due to the lack of talent in Hong Kong and wider region. This is an area that Internationally sourced candidates have more chance of penetrating than across other disciplines.

For Technology there has been a significant increase in the numbers of women that have entered the sector over the last few years, and many Technology and High-Tech firms have female VP’s, Marketing Directors, and Sales or Commercial heads.

As the market continues to slow down, salaries will remain fairly static. For external moves professionals can expect a salary increment of 10%-15%.
